The Netherlands is hosting the first European edition of the Authentic Leadership in Action (ALIA) programme, which has run very successfully at the Shambhala Institute in Halifax Canada for a number of years. Its powerful combination of focused work on building the capacities we need to engage the world effectively at this time, with the arts and spirituality, make it pretty unique. In this way, all dimensions of ourselves are invited and activated. I will be offering a module on “An Integral Practice for Evolutionary Leadership and Change” with Dylan Newcomb (who has a background in dance and music). We love working together, and this promises to be a special few days. Click here for more info.

Tags: authentic learning in action, ALIA, shambhala institute, peter merry, dylan newcomb, integral, spiral dynamics integral, u process, art of hosting
The 16 Ways http://petermerry.gaia.com Peter tag:gaia.com,2009:Gaia-272743 Fri, 29 May 2009 22:21:44 GMT http://petermerry.gaia.com/blog/2009/5/the-16-ways

The 16 Ways - Moving with the power of opposites

Check out this short intro video to Dylan Newcomb's 16 Ways. Art of Hosting we are in at the moment, we spent today on the art of hosting death. How do we help the old to die gracefully, and in such a way that it fertilises the soil for the new? It was one of the most profound and insightful days I have spent. It is part of a four day process in which we are exploring the arts of hosting protection, death, the emergence of the new, and bridges from old to new.

Today we told stories of hosting death in ourselves, of loved ones, of organisational forms, and of species on the planet at this time. We asked how do we know if something is at the end of its natural life-cycle or if we have just not learned to nurture it properly - only to realise that this was an inadequate question. We realised the deep truth in dying every moment to live the next one. We understood the need for conscious choice in every moment, in which we choose to bring one path to life, and allow a number of other potential paths to die. We felt the importance of honouring what has been, and where we choose not to go.

We delved into what it meant to lead death in an organisation. From the moment of announcing with clarity and commitment a decision that something has to change (although we don't know what yet), through the hosting of a collective quest into what needs to die, into a collective presencing to that which wants to be born, finalising in another clear moment of leadership decision in which the new is announced and a line is drawn. Ritual marks key moments of this process.

This is such a rich subject. There is much more to be explored and harvested here. And it feels like an essential art to develop, with so much disintegration in the world right now, with such a need to fertilise rather than poison the soil for the new, and with the need for rapid experimentation in which experiments that don't work need to be released to die as soon as possible with the learning harvested to feed the next iteration. Dying for life.

Click here to hear a harvest of the Open Space session we had on this. That weakness is also a major cause of the lack of fundamental large-scale innovation in alternative energy.

As the report states:

“Let’s explore our Green meets Gold paradox. In our current paradigm, energy sources have a cost for extraction (wells, mines and pumps), transportation (pipelines, ships, and transportation) and refining (ports, refineries). These costs are amortized over an average of 30 years and, as such, need to generate consistent investment returns in the form of predictable operating revenue for the same period. Our power generation facilities are financed through bonds which, like the commodities that they burn, have amortized investment lives ranging from 20 to 40 years. And then the distribution grid – that tangled web of inputs and distributed outputs – are similarly financed. In less than a decade, ThomsonReuters reports that in many regions, municipal borrowing for infrastructure projects has more than doubled from 2000 to 2008 meaning that the inventory of these long-term performance investments has skyrocketed. We would love to have as many people as possible from around the world. See below for info and come to the Netherlands, where shift happens!

EuroConFab 2008 Newsflash 01

From Friday afternoon October 31th until Sunday morning November 2nd the Center for Human Emergence (CHE) organizes the third international conference on:

The practice of Spiral Dynamics Integral

You can register for the EuroConFab 2008 on-line. The registration form can be found on: www.spiraldynamicsintegral.nl

EuroConFab 2008 – the basics

The purpose is to create an internationally shared field of best practices of emergence and evolutionary change.

We start on Friday October 31st at 12.30hrs. The closure of the program is on Sunday November 2nd after lunch around 14.00hrs.

Early Bird price, book before 30 September: 395 Euro (19%VAT not included), after this date: 495 Euro (19%VAT not included). This includes conference fee, meals and accommodation (in single rooms) at conference centre Zonheuvel, in Doorn: www.hotelzonheuvel.eu .

A preview of some sessions

Every newsflash we will give you a preview of some sessions. This time more information on the contributions of Don Beck and Kees Hogendijk, and the latest affirmations for sessions we received.

Dr Don Beck on Large Scale Psychology

Dr. Don Beck will focus on a new branch of psychology that he as co-created called "Large-Scale Psychology." It will describe the change and transformational processes in cities, cultures, movements, states, and entire nations/countries. Not only will it reflect an understanding of Spiral Dynamics, but will also introduce the Assimilation-Contrast Effect from the theory building by Muzafer Sherif around the theme of Social Judgment. He will identify the Conditions for Large Scale change and how it is now possible to craft, through the principles and processes of Natural Design, the multiple goals of a sustainable society, one that has developed the skills of resilience, and is aware of the many aspects of emergence at the DNA core of decision-making and competency layers within leadership. Case studies will include, the United States, the Netherlands, Palestine-Israel, South Africa, and now Mexico. See how theory and practice can inform each other as we develop greater complexity to deal with our problems and challenges of existence.

Kees Hoogendijk on Energy

Kees is an entrepreneur (with a background in Chemical Engineering), who went on a search (in the year 2000) for the essence of energy: energy in people, energy in organisations, energy in societies, energy as a source for peace and energy as a sustainable source for local (distributed) electricity production. A source of energy for everyone and owned by everyone. A source of energy which transcends the notion of scarcity and creates the integral experience of abundance and peace from within. This passionate journey lead him to the deep knowledge of many ancient cultures. His sources of inspiration were those who had made this journey before and published about it: Newton, Tesla, Buckminster Fuller, Schwaller de Lubicz, Steiner, Bailey, Blavatski, Teilhard de Chardin, Walter Russel, the great quantum physicists and some important alchemists. Kees reports about the challenge to translate universal ancient principles into practical solutions. This lead to a wealth of insights and experiences, some simple energy principles and practical lessons of what works and what doesn't on the path to manifesting new energy technologies. When energy is shared freely, a truly important condition is fulfilled to make a contribution to a better world with unlimited opportunities for every human being. When there is energy, there is water, food, health and the opportunity to experience personal growth.

Peter Merry on the Hague Center for Global Governance, Innovation and Emergence, and the latest that is emerging on the world stage.

Latest confirmations for sessions:

Bjarni Snæbjörn Jónsson from Iceland will present the results of the second society values scan in Iceland.

Christopher Cooke wil not only share his experiences with SDi in Healthcare projects, he also shares the next developments in PeopleSCAN. Great!

Jeroen Maes will share his experience with one of the first cases of implementing holacracy in Europe.

And more to come …

Call for contributions

This is a conference for practitioners by practitioners. So we invite you to put forward your experiences, quests and questions and exchange, share and co-create them with the other participants. If you wish to share your daily practice during a session, we invite you to send us a short description of your subject as soon as possible and no later than October 10th. You can do that by sending an e-mail to euroconfab@humanemergence.nl.

FAQs

We notice an increasing number questions that people ask us. We try to answer every question with care. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions:

Question

- Do I have to be SDI 1 certified to attend?

Answer

- No, that is not necessary. We do use Spiral Dynamics Integral as a language during the conference and require that you understand this. So if you have not followed a course in this material we ask you to attend the introduction workshop prior to the conference. Friday morning, 9 to 13:00 at the Zonheuvel, cost 75 euro.

Question

- I can only be at a part of the conference, is it still possible to attend?

Answer

- The basic idea of the conference is that it it's a two days event. The evenings are part of the program and contribute to building an international community of best practitioners. But yes, it is possible to attend a part of the program. However you will miss some very interesting best practices.

Question

- I have the possibilty to stay overnight at home or somewhere else. Do I have to stay overnight in Huize Bergen?

Answer

- No, you don't have to stay overnight in Huize Bergen. However it is included with the participation fee.

Question

- What is the business model of financial objective behind the euroconfab?

Answer

- We try to keep the costs to a minimum, don't work with a profit objective and can barely give discounts. If you would like, we will send you our budget. Let us know on: euroconfab@humanemergence.nl.

Question

- Talking about the participation fee, is it possible to get a discount when I don't stay overnight or attend only one day?

Answer

- People can come for one day but we decided not to offer discounts for this. We see the EuroConfab as a group process and want to encourage everyone to join the whole of it. We want to become a community for two days. We do not want to encourage people to do (get or give ) their thing, be a presenter/consumer of a specific part and then leave. We would love the dynamic of a conference for the people by the people, so there is an interchange. Also: as it is an international conference, most people will join the lot.

Question

- Can I get a discount when I participate as facilitator of a session?

Answer

- No, we work with the principle that we all have to contribute equally, also in financial aspect. Even the organizing committee of the conference doesn't get a discount on their participation fee.

Question

- What is the difference with "Klaar Om Te Wenden"?

Answer

- The ConFab is a community of practice. There will be more interaction, we work with smaller groups and there will be more in depth conversations about practices, experiences and questions

Question

- I am not able to participate in this EuroConFab, what now?

Answer

- This is the third EuroConFab (and we are a bit proud of that). We are full of confidence that this has proven to be an event that is returning each year. Stay informed through http://www.humanemergence.org

See you on October 31st!

Kindest regards from the EuroConFab-team 2008:

Auke van Nimwegen, Midas Buddemeijer, Jasper Rienstra en Anne-Marie Voorhoeve

Tags: spiral dynamics integral, confab, center for human emergence, netherlands, europe
The Hague Center for Global Governance, Innovation and Emergence http://petermerry.gaia.com Peter tag:gaia.com,2008:Gaia-215122 Mon, 25 Aug 2008 13:53:54 GMT http://petermerry.gaia.com/blog/2008/8/the_hague_center_for_global_governance_innovation_and_emergence
Just a note to say that the Center for Human Emergence Netherlands has submitted a proposal to the Dutch government to host the Hague Center for Global Governance, Innovation and Emergence. There was a funding opportunity which made us focus an intention that had been around for a while. This is going to happen, whether this particular funding comes through or not. Through our company Engage! we have engaged organisations from multinational corporations through to small NGOs, school and local communities. In that process I have of course come to learn of and respect many others out there who are thinking and working from an Integral perspective, whether they use that title or not.

From around 2005, I started coming across and slowly exploring the world of sacred geometry and energy in its broadest sense. The books started to fill up the shelves. Then last summer (2007), following a trip to Avebury in the south of England (the location of the biggest stone circle on the planet and said to be the planet’s belly-button to the galaxy), I felt a strong call to give this all more explicit attention, particularly the field of earth energy. I knew that know I had start tuning in to what this all meant and what its implications were for me, my life and my work.

However, my agenda was full for the next four months, so I decided to keep it empty from February this year (2008), and explore what this new phase had to offer. As ever, when one creates space and holds a certain vibration around it, things started to move – rapidly. Without going into details of the journey here, I feel I now a fairly good sense of the basics of sacred geometry and energetics. As well as the books, I have spent time with Marko Pogacnik and Richard Leviton, and will be spending a few days with Drunvalo Melchizedek in September. This August I attended the first Integral Theory in Action conference, and coming back felt a strong need to see if I could connect up these two worlds. Wilber doesn’t explicitly mention sacred geometry in any of his works, as far as I can see. This is what this paper is about. We’ll see where it goes…

Holons and Holarchies

The essence of the relationship seems to lie in the concept of holons and holarchies, as originally developed by Arthur Koestler and taken up by Wilber. In its core, it is about parts and wholes. The definition of a holon is something that is a part and whole, and the assumption is that everything is a holon – so everything is both a whole in its own right and part of a bigger whole. Holons then arrange themselves in holarchies, examples being atoms-molecules-cells-multicellular organisms, or letters-words-sentences-paragraphs. So each new level transcends and includes previous levels. This also happens in interior dimensions, where new levels of individual and collective development also transcend and include previous levels.

BOX ON HOLONS ETC

Sacred geometry seems to me to be in its core about the relationship between parts and wholes. In the world of matter and nature, many studies have been carried out into these relationships. One of the seminal works in this area was The Power of Limits, Proportional Harmonies in Nature, Art and Architecture (Doczi, 1981). Doczi looks for example at plants, crafts, calendars, animals and philosophies, and discovers the same essential proportional harmonies. He coins a term to describe the pattern that he finds - “dinergy, the energy-creating process that transforms discrepancies into harmonies by allowing differences to complement each other” (p3). This is a perfect definition of an Integral process, and could well be used to describe what Wilber has done in his great body of work over the years.

In the physical world, these part-whole relationships are easy to measure. The basic composition of “dinergic” relationships is the “golden section, a uniquely reciprocal relationship between two unequal parts of a whole, in which the small part stands in the same proportion to the large part as the large part stands to the whole” (p2). The relationship is known in mathematics as Phi, an irrational number with no end (close to 5/8). This relationship manifests in a “golden rectangle” (also known as a Pythagorean rectangle) of 5x8 proportions, it creates a certain spiralling form and plays out in the Fibonnaci series of numbers. When organic matter grows, it grows according to these proportions. Doczi reports on many studies that show how people naturally prefer forms in which the parts are in this nature of relationship with each other.

BOX ON PHI ETC

Postulate

So I believe that what we have in the golden mean is a mathematical description of the most adequate relationship between parts in a greater whole. In Integral language, this would mean the most ideal proportions in a holarchy. Now, as we can see in Box 2, the Phi number gets more subtle and precise as we move down the Fibonnaci sequence, and never ends. My postulate would be that this is a description of the growing depth and span of a holarchy. So the more levels of holon that transcend and include previous holons in a holarchy, the more refined and naturally supportive of life the relationships between the parts and wholes in the holarchy become. And as we know, it’s turtles all the way up and down…

GRAPHIC???

Integral theory postulates that as a new level of holon emerges it re-arranges the relationships on the levels below, making the holons at that level more functional and bringing them closer to their true purpose and identity, thus enabling them to both be more refined and “agentic”, as well as contributing more effectively to the greater whole, and more “communal”. This would fit the idea of the parts and wholes coming into a more life-supporting relationship with each other, closer to Phi.

To take a simple example – when cells are transcended and included by the container of a molecule, they re-arrange themselves into more specific functions, held by the molecule. They go through another major transformation into greater differentiation and functionality as a cell container emerges to wrap around the molecules, and the same happens to the molecules. And a next step of greater integration and differentiation occurs as the multi-cellular organism emerges.

Implications and Investigations

So what? Great question.

There are many further tracks I could take this, making links into the various dimensions of sacred geometry such as the platonic solids, flower of life, energy generation, and looking at that that all tells us about the dynamics of holarchies. However for now I would just like to put this postulate out there and see what feedback it generates.

I have also primarily focused on the exterior perspectives above, as that is where most of the research and writing around sacred geometry has happened. I have a hunch that the same thing works in the interior dimensions (individual holarchies of development, and collective holarchies of fields of relationship). Maybe one day we will actually be able to measure the different energy fields that emerge as these interior fields develop – in fact, we probably already can. Then we could explore whether the resonance of those holarchy fields also matches a golden section proportion – without of course reducing the interior experience to an exterior number.

Why is this relevant to Integral theory? It will add a currently missing dimension, namely a more specific understanding of the dynamics and relationships between parts and wholes in a holarchy.

Why is this relevant to Sacred Geometry? It will locate this wisdom in a well-developed, broader theoretical field, and enable it to see its place in the bigger whole – releasing it by limiting it. This will contribute to taking it beyond what is often perceived to be a new-agey and vague esoteric domain, into a more rigorous and embracing intellectual as well as experiential dialogue – giving it more credence and sharpening our understanding in the process.

So – let me know what you think so far, any connections you see with existing writings, and any questions you think it would be cool to explore.

18.08.08

Tags: integral theory, sacred geometry, holon, holarchy, phi, golden section, fibonacci, golden rectangle, ken wilber
Essences 9 http://petermerry.gaia.com Peter tag:gaia.com,2008:Gaia-212684 Fri, 15 Aug 2008 19:38:42 GMT http://petermerry.gaia.com/blog/2008/8/essences_9
The level of our commitment is the measure of our freedom
The level of our freedom is the measure of our commitment

Our practice is to be fully engaged and totally free, now

(Inspired by Diane Hamilton calling on the voice of the Kosmocentric Protector during the Big Mind Big Heart session at the recent Integral Theory in Action conference)

Tags: commitment, engagement, freedom, absolute, relative, boddhisatva, big mind, big heart, diane hamilton, kosmocentric
